Botswana is where our story began. Our founder, Henrietta Loyd, first fell for its wilds more than 45 years ago, a love that pioneered a new kind of luxury travel.
“It’s hard to beat the middle of the Kalahari Desert, being surrounded by the shimmering saltpans of the Makgadikgadi, with the sounds of a distant lion roaring and I mean nothing else around,” she recounts.
Today, a luxury Botswana safari with cazenove+loyd invites you to experience Africa’s untamed beauty at its purest. Glide across the Okavango Delta in a traditional mokoro, rise to the roar of the Big Five, explore Moremi’s lush channels or retreat to exclusive camps in Selinda and Kwando, where wildlife sightings unfold in absolute privacy.
Whether you’re looking for a family safari in Botswana, a romantic escape or a private guided trip, our safari experts will help you explore its most exclusive corners.
The floodwaters usually reach their peak between July + September, but that doesn't mean that they are the only months worth travelling. Some of my favourite safaris have been when the water was lower, which offers amazing wildlife sightings.

There are no mandatory vaccinations if you are travelling directly from the UK, EU, or USA.
However if you are travelling from, or transferring through, a Yellow Fever risk country you will need to be vaccinated for that.
You will also want to obtain Malaria prevention medication, especially if you are travelling in the northern wetlands areas, and a rabies vaccination if you are going on safari.
The official language of Botswana is English, however the national language – and the one most spoken – is Setswana.
Botswana is also home to many smaller group languages and dialects such as Kalanga, Sekgalagadi, and Herero. All guides and safari staff will speak English though, so no need to reach for Duolingo just yet!
Botswana is one of the safest countries to visit in Africa, owing to political stability, relative prosperity, and well-established tourism industry. If you are going on safari, there are potential risks when encountering wildlife, however listening to your expert guides and always following safari protocol when out in the bush will mitigate these and allow you to have a safe and enriching safari experience.
Botswana offers some of the best and most unique safari experiences in Africa. From spotting hippos and wading birds on a wetlands safari in the Okavango Delta, to horseback trekking on the Makgadikgadi salt pans, to a classic Big Five game drive in Chobe National Park, Botswana has everything you would want from a safari holiday.
Some amazing highlights of Botswana are as follows: the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO world heritage site and the largest inland delta in the world, is home to countless animals, including hippos, lions, leopards, and wild dogs; Chobe National Park boasts one of Africa’s largest elephant populations and excellent river boat safaris; the Makgadikgadi salt pans are bursting with life in the rainy season, from meerkats and flamingos, to an impressive migrantzebra population.
Botswana is home to practically all the iconic safari animals, including the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinoceros. You may also see giraffes, zebra, hippos, wild dogs, hyenas, many species of antelope, and countless birds. The best time for viewing these tends to be in the summer dry season when the bush cover is low, however the wet season is great for birdwatching and for spotting baby animals.
