About the trip

We are planning an incredible journey across Patagonia led by our Head of Global Product, Jonathan Goldsmith.

Jonathan has been exploring Patagonia for over 20 years, returning whenever the opportunity arises to discover more of this vast region that stretches from the fertile coasts of Chile, over the Andes and across the seemingly endless Pampas of Argentina. Sparsely populated, yet full of history, from the early Welsh settlers to a modern gaucho culture; barren yet teeming with wildlife, from enormous penguin colonies to lone pumas stalking the slopes of the mountains, Patagonia is like nowhere else on Earth.

The concept for this journey is to showcase this beauty away from the most visited regions. We will meet in Buenos Aires to prepare for the journey with an introduction to Argentina before heading into the southern corners.

The first stop will be in the newest National Park, Patagonia Azul. Here we will stay at Bahia Bustamante. Once home to a seaweed farm and now a centre for wildlife conservation, this is where the Patagonian Steppe colides with the Atlantic ocean, where penguins, sea lions and countless seabirds live and where whales glide by on their way to and from Antarctica.

We will then head off on a true adventure across the Steppe towards the Andes. En route we’ll meet the gauchos who work farms the size of a small country, we’ll discover petrified forest and visit the magical Cave of Hands with its 9,000 year old rock art.

From here we will cross the Andes themselves and enter the Aysén Region of Chile. Part of the Rewildling Chile project set up by the late Doug Tomkins, Patagonia National Park is one of the biggest success stories and been recognised globally for its world-class conservation and ecotourism. We will end the journey with time at the extraordinary Explora hotel in the park. It’s here that we hope to spot the elusive pumas with the help of expert trackers.

As the group journey ends, some may choose to fly home via Santiago, for anyone wishing to explore this amazing region further we can arrange extensions to all corners of it.

Itinerary Highlights

Secret Tango, Buenos Aires
Secret Tango, Buenos Aires

We will start the journey in Buenos Aires with an evening in a small, hidden-away tango show. Far from the big theatres, this is an intimate affair where top musicians and dancers perform to just 30 people, often with guest stars and no set script. It’s true tango and definitely Argentine.

Magellanic penguin at Bahia Bustamante
Magellanic penguin at Bahia Bustamante

At first sight, Bahia Bustamante appears to be the barren and lifeless meeting of desert and ocean; don’t be deceived; this is a treasure trove of wildlife. Thousands of penguins nest here, guanacos roam the shoreline, sea lions gather, and countless seabirds come here to breed. We’ll explore by land and by sea, venturing into the marine national park and maybe spotting passing whales.

Gauchos on the Steppe
Gauchos on the Steppe

Travelling across the Patagonian Steppe is one of those experiences that reminds you how small you are and how big the world is. Endlessly stark and endlessly beautiful in a way that you will find hard to describe to people who have not seen it. Spot gauchos at work with their dogs, guanacos and rheas roam free and, as we draw closer, the Andes become a permanent backdrop.

Cave of Hands, Argentina
Cave of Hands, Patagonia

One of the “New World’s” most important sites, the Cave of Hands is home to art that dates back 9,000 years. For millennia, the indigenous people of this region came here and blew paint over their hands to leave permanent evidence of their existence. Located in a remote gorge, it is all too often missed by visitors to Argentina. We will take our time here, exploring with specialists and learning the real history of humanity in the Americas.

The elusive Patagonian Puma
The elusive Patagonian Puma

It took around a dozen trips and nearly 20 years of trying for Jonathan to spot his first puma in Patagonia, and in just two days he saw five. Much of that was down to sheer bad luck, but it is also a testament to the work that has been done in Chile to bring these wonderful cats back. We’ll have the best trackers with us, so there is every chance that the journey will end with some incredible sightings.
